MapleLove – Part 8

Keline and Pauline arrived at Boon Lay MRT at 1 pm. Though the game only commenced at 2 pm, Keline couldn’t help arriving early to get ready. As expected, the place was teeming with activities and packed with holiday-makers coming from all over the island. Keline was so excited that she was already scanning the crowd as they entered the complex. They headed for the food court to have their lunch but Keline’s mind was too unsettled to have any appetite. It was only after Pauline reminded her of the amount of walking they needed to do later in the hunt that she gulped down her bowl of noodles. Soon it was game time. Keline decided to start looking from the basement upward since they were already there.

Having briefed Pauline on what to look out for, the two pairs of eyes screened through the throng, zeroing in on any pair of teenage guys in black top and blue bottom. It sounded easy at first but they soon found out that it wasn’t so. All of a sudden it seemed that they were seeing black and blue wherever they looked. Whenever they spotted a pair that fitted the description, they would move forward to have a closer look. Keline would then discreetly say the password 'BK’ and the 'right’ guy should reply with the correct password – 'KL’ (Keline Lam). However, the guys either ignored her or gave her the wrong password in the form of 'huh?' or 'siao'. All except one. The guy actually directed her to 'Mac’ after telling her that there was no 'BK’ (Burger King) at the mall. Not expecting the guy to be so helpful, Keline didn’t know how to react. She thanked him and moved on sheepishly.

After more than two hour of snaking in and out of the numerous stores, the initial enthusiasm of the gals was wearing out. They decided to take a break and proceeded to the Kopitiam on the third level. While on the escalator, Keline overheard the conversation of a couple of guys ahead of her.

'Are you sure she is in this mall, BK?’ said one of the guys.

'Ya, she says to look for her here,’ replied the other guy.

'BK?’ It was then that Keline realised that not only was the guy who replied in black and blue but he was also about the same size and height as her 'BK’. Suspecting that he could be 'him’, she pushed herself forward to catch up with them. Just as she was about to call out to him, they entered '77th Street’. There, they found the gal whom they were talking about. Keline almost cried out, having come so close to locating her beloved virtual husband. Pauline, who had been trailing closely behind her, consoled her and shoved her towards the food court.

Sipping her glass of cold Milo, Pauline suggested that they should station themselves on the top floor so as to have a bird’s eye view of the complex and to try to seek out BK from above - just like an eagle hunting for its prey. Keline agreed since BK would also be moving about and by staying put at one location, they might just cross each other path. They went up to highest floor but were not comfortable seeing patients going in and out of the various clinics located there. They moved down one level and settled down at a spot which gave them a clear view of the lower floors. They remained there for about an hour before moving on to another spot. Soon, it was dinner time and there was still no sign of BK. Keline decided to call it a day as she had promised her mother that she would be back for dinner. As she was descending to the ground floor, Keline could sense that she was being watched but somehow she wasn’t able to pinpoint the source of the stare. Then with a heavy heart, she stepped into the train.
